Wildfires can have devastating effects on communities and the environment, but their impact extends beyond the fire itself. Wildfire smoke, which contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5), poses a significant hazard to workers, even those who may not be near the fire. These tiny particles, 2.5 microns in diameter or smaller, are small enough to enter the lungs and cause serious health problems. Breathing in PM2.5 can lead to reduced lung function, bronchitis, worsening asthma, heart failure, and even fatal health outcomes.
To protect workers, Cal/OSHA Section 5141.1 requires employers to take action when PM2.5 levels become hazardous. In this webinar, we’ll discuss the various health risks associated with wildfire smoke exposure and the specific employer obligations outlined in the regulation. Attendees will learn when employers must comply with these requirements and how to ensure the safety of their workforce during wildfire events.
In addition to understanding the health risks and legal responsibilities, the webinar will cover practical measures for protecting workers from wildfire smoke. This includes how to determine whether air quality is unhealthy, how to use N95 respirators effectively, and other strategies for safeguarding workers’ health. We’ll also discuss high-risk conditions that may increase vulnerability to smoke exposure and how to mitigate these risks.
Furthermore, workers will learn about their rights, including the ability to seek medical treatment for smoke-related illnesses without fear of reprisal. Employers will gain insights into their responsibilities for providing a safe working environment, even during wildfire season, and how to implement training for supervisors to manage these situations effectively.
By the end of this session, participants will have the knowledge and tools to respond to wildfire smoke hazards, minimize exposure, and ensure that the health of workers is prioritized—helping everyone stay safe in the face of one of the most challenging environmental hazards.
