Middle managers serve as communicators for upper management, improve morale by acting as employee advocates, and help ensure employees follow company policies, procedures, and culture. Managers also account for at least 70% of employee engagement scores.
Yet, despite their influential role, only 20% of managers strongly agree that their organizations help them be successful as people managers according to McKinsey (2023). In addition, today’s managers struggle with accelerated change, daily “brain drain”, epic levels of burnout, talent shortages, and lingering uncertainties about managing a hybrid workforce all while receiving little recognition for their efforts.
In short, managers face pressures from above and below and many companies are unintentionally thwarting their ability to perform and to focus on their most important role -- fostering and developing talent.
